If I have problems running Google Nik in the future, I will be glad to pay for the DxO version but I'm not going to pay them for something I was already given for free and still works.

The DxO version runs exactly the same as the Google version does so, I deleted the trial and reloaded the original Google Nik modules. I don't use either so I don't know which. I downloaded the DxO trial version and the only difference I could see is that there is one less module either they combined the two sharpening modules or just removed one.

Technology is a wonderful thing, in photography as elsewhere, but that does not necessarily mean that we should do a thing, simply because doing the thing is easy.Īll a matter of taste, of course, and one man's ketchup is another man's ambrosia.ĭxO says they optimized the Nik code for the latest operating systems but, I'm running the original Google version with the latest Mac OS (10.14.3) and it runs as good as it always has. More generally speaking, the term "overcooked" seems applicable. Often, the contrast is totally efex'ed away, in the name of "HDR", or there are halos or grotesque colors that do not occur in nature. I rarely see a photo where I think to myself, "this photograph needs more efex."īut I quite often see photos where I think to myself, "too bad the efex were ladled on so heavily." Out of the corner of my eye, I observe that they are eating the same cheeseburger that I am, but their cheeseburger is slathered in ketchup.Īnd I wonder to myself, is this a good cheeseburger, or isn't it? If the cheeseburger is good, then does its flavor really need to be concealed? if the cheeseburger is not good, then is the ketchup really going to help? Is a good meal about the cheeseburger, or is it merely about the amount of ketchup? I see fellow diners doing this at restaurants. My impression is that "efex" are a bit like ketchup - they are both very easy to overapply, and in both cases, the point of diminishing returns arrives quickly, the point at which one is no longer tasting the food, one is only tasting ketchup. Others have taken this opportunity to share general opinions about Nik and about "efex" in general, so I will as well. I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth. But the good news is we have a new version that is bug free. I would prefer if DXO would pick up support for X-Trans but they have made it abundantly clear that is not in the cards. In some respects I like film pack better than Silver Efex.įilm Pack is fully integrated in DXO PhotoLab where it is seamless to use and at some point they might op to go in that direction with Nik or they might simply go the direction of the Nik Collections as a plug in. It will be interesting to see how DXO proceeds with this collection since they have duplicate offerings (Film Pack). DXO's first task was to bring the code up to date with 6 or 7 year old code I expect it was a task. There have been multiple OS upgrades since that point (5 or six on the Mac and a few on Microsucks updates). Google stopped maintaining the Nik collection in 2012 - 6 years ago. Goggle didn't want the Nik Collection they wanted Snapseed. When new versions of an OS are released it is not uncommon for S/W to develop issues over time and eventually the code will be obsolete.

I believe they tweaked it to resolve some issues working together with more recent software.Īll S/W has to be maintained.

I'm surprised DXO allowed it to be independent of their product line, and very pleased for that.
